Installment Plan - Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What’s the idea behind an “Installment Plan?”
A: The idea is to make it easier for a member to pay for their membership by spreading the payments out over time, rather than making a single, lump, payment as the standard method. Joining the Installment plan locks your price as of the day of purchase of your WSFS membership.
Q: Okay, that sounds like a good idea. How will this work for Montréal?
A: First, each prospective member must purchase their WSFS membership. A WSFS membership costs $70 (CAD) and provides the core aspect of a member’s rights and privileges. The WSFS membership must be purchased prior to entering into the Installment plan and cannot be refunded under any circumstances.
Q: What does ‘WSFS’ mean? And what do I get for my $70 (CAD)?
A: ‘WSFS’ refers to the “World Science Fiction Society.” WSFS is the organization that holds the World Science Fiction Convention annually at locations selected by the membership. The last vote was held in Seattle in August of 2025 and Montréal was selected as the venue for 2027.
A WSFS membership allows a member to:
- Nominate authors/works for the Hugo Awards to be held in Montréal (providing the member has purchased their WSFS membership prior to the end of January 31st, 2027).
- Download the Hugo Packet (once the nominees are announced and the content of the packet negotiated with the publishers).
- Vote in the Hugo Balloting for the Hugo Awards to be held in Montréal.
- Vote in the Site Selection Balloting for the 2029 Worldcon (currently there is one bid, for Dublin, Ireland).
Q: Wow. That’s quite a lot. So, I’ve purchased my WSFS membership. What do I need to do next?
A: Now you need to purchase your attending supplement. The supplement you purchase will depend on your age on the day that the Montréal 2027 Worldcon starts (i.e., your age on 2 September 2027). If you 31 years of age or older, you will need to purchase an Adult attending supplement. If you are between the ages of 18 to 30 years of age, you can purchase the Young Adult attending supplement. Montréal does not offer the Installment plan for “Fast track” or Teen attending supplements, except as part of a family Installment plan.
Q: What if I’m purchasing memberships for a group of friends or my family?
A: The same general principles apply. First you will need to purchase each member of your party a WSFS membership. Please note that a WSFS membership is optional for members aged 8 thru 17 years (as of 2 September 2027). Do note, that should you choose not to purchase a WSFS membership for child or teen, that they will not have WSFS rights and will not have the privileges listed above.
So, if you are purchasing memberships for a family of two adults, one teen (aged 13-17) and one “Fast track” (child aged 8-12), you will be purchasing at least two WSFS memberships (for the two adults) and up to two additional WSFS memberships depending on the interests and/or preferences of the two younger members. If either, or both, desire to be able to nominate for the Hugo Awards to be awarded in Montreal, your group will need to purchase the appropriate number of WSFS memberships.
Once you’ve purchased the WSFS memberships for those of your family that need them, you would then select the appropriate attending supplements (in the above example; two adults ($250 each), one teen ($90) and one “Fast Track” ($45). This totals $635 (CAD; 250+250+90+45=635). This total, is the amount that would be placed on the Installment plan.
Q: Okay. So, if I’m purchasing for just myself, I buy my WSFS membership ($70 CAD) and then the adult attending supplement (I’m over 31). The $250 (CAD) is what goes onto the Installment plan. How many payments do I need to make? Is there a minimum amount?
A: You may divide the payment into as many pieces as you need to meet your fiscal situation. We recommend between four and six payments for an individual, for both ease of budgeting and keeping track of payments. The only limitation is that the minimum payment being made may not be less than $30
Q: And the same applies for families or groups?
A: Yes. In the example above, after paying for the family’s WSFS memberships (two to four depending on group member’s preferences and desires), the family’s total is $635 (CAD). The family might choose to make six payments of $100 and one payment of $35 for a total of $635. They might also choose to make seven payments of $80 and the final payment of $75 for the family total of $635.
Q: When does the payment plan need to be completed?
A: The last payment must be made no later than 30 June 2027.
Q: What happens if my plan to attend Montréal changes and I can no longer attend?
A: In the event that you can no longer attend, please contact Registration (registration@montreal2027.org) to let us know. Your need will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
